It gives me great pleasure to introduce the newly refurbished Nenagh Arts Centre.
Over the past eleven months the Town Hall in Banba Square has undergone a startling transformation. Inside, the old seating has been removed, windows changed, rooms have been altered and added to and a new sound and lighting system has been included. Outside, the building has a distinctive new look; with overhanging glass rooms and a crisp white finish contrasting with original stonework. In front of the building, new paving leads gently into the Square.
The refurbishment of the building owes much to many people, not least our funders the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Nenagh Town Council and North Tipperary County Council. Their interest, maintained in the project though difficult economic times, was especially heartening. We recognize the work of our design team and builders and the individual companies and technicians who offered their expertise.
As Chairperson of a voluntary committee, I wish to thank the Board of Directors who gave of their time to see this project through to fruition and I thank the current and former staff who worked to realize the project and who have prepared the first programme of events that will light up this new building.
The Arts Centre arose from community partnership organisation Nenagh Community Network and as such we wish to hold and foster the community ethos of the project. In this manner, we welcome your views and suggestions on this buildings various uses – from community to cultural, from thought to expression.
The original Town Hall was built as the sign over its’ entrance notes in A.D. 1889,
designed by Town Engineer Robert Gill. This year 2010, it receives a new lease of life.
We look forward to seeing you at Nenagh Arts Centre.
Tom Ryan
Chairperson
