Longer Days And Thoughts Of Summer

With longer days on the way and a summer of sporting and other outdoor events we are coming to the close of our evening programme. Through the summer months we will run a numbers of summer camps, kids shows, as well as our usual classes. We thank you for your support and we hope you enjoyed the varied and interesting events we presented and possibly see you at some of our closing events in May.
On both a personal level and for the centre I am delighted to say we commenced a new pilot scheme in association with Tipperary Arts Office developing and producing a new theatre piece by a Tipperary artist. Nenagh Arts Centre will use resources, rehearsal space, technical support and guidance we believe will provide a platform to kick start their career. In that quest, we commissioned a young actress from Littleton, Thurles, Roseanna Purcell to continue the development of a 20-minute draft (Test Copy) into a full-length play over the past 4 months. Set in Tipperary, the play examines the untempered frenzy of youth and the struggle of standing out, for reasons good or bad, amongst a melting pot of peers and diverse personalities by following Louise Fennessy, one of 89 Transition year girls at St. Catherine’s Convent Secondary School. The piece is directed by Pat Kiernan a well-established Director having worked with Enda Walsh on a number of occasions including their first piece of work ‘Disco Pigs’ that went to achieve huge international success and was subsequently turned in to a film.

Test Copy is now in rehearsals, last week we had a first reading and the next few weeks promised to be a very exciting time for all involved in the project. From an audience perspective, this is a unique opportunity to see new writing from a young Tipperary artists on its very first performance the first of many we hope all over the country. We would like you to come along and support Roseanna Purcell and everyone involved in the production on Saturday May 13th at 8.30. And finally, a mention of our evening of local talent taking place on the previous Saturday, it promises to be a wonderful evening of entertainment.
