Úna Ní Bhroiméil is an Irish historian and academic. She was a lecturer, specialising in in American history, at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick 1996-2023. She is the author of Building Irish Identity in America 1870-1914: The Gaelic Revival and has published articles extensively in Irish American journals and newspapers. She presented the second series of TG4’s documentary “Tríd an Lionsa” 2018-19 and is a regular contributor on the subject of American history and politics to TG4’s “7 lá”, Raidió na Gaeltachta’s “Tús Áite” and “An tSeachtain”. She is currently working on a book about the Irish American lawyer, John Quinn, who was an art collector and powerful patron in early 20th century New York.

John Quinn (1870-1924) was known in the Ireland of his time as ‘The man from New York’ a supporter of cultural nationalism, organiser of the American tours of W,B. Yeats and Douglas Hyde, and as a financial wellspring for Irish causes. In the United States he was an extremely busy and successful corporate lawyer. But Quinn ultimately became best known as a patron of the arts and as an art collector. A patron of key literary figures such as Yeats, Synge, and Joyce as well as Conrad, T.S Eliot, Ford Maddox Ford and Ezra Pound, he began collecting contemporary art in the early twentieth century and amassed a significant collection, particularly of the work of contemporary European artists such as Picasso, Derain, Matisse, Duchamp and Brancusi as well as English and Irish artists such as Augustus John, Jack Yeats and Nathaniel Hone.
In this talk I will consider Quinn in the context of his time, the place he inhabits and his contacts, his activities during World War One and his attitudes to his fellow Irish Americans. I will offer an understanding of Quinn’s role in the cultural life of America and of Irish America at a particular time and place and how he operated at the nexus of wealth, power and modernity in New York at the beginning of the twentieth century.
