Nenagh Youth Theatre has been our resident youth theatre since 2009 and every year they are here, they bring something new, vibrant and exciting to our venue. Hundreds of local people have either participated or attended youth theatre workshops or shows throughout the years. They have shot short films in our auditorium, used our outdoor area for site specific shows and performed several lives plays and pantomimes on our stage.
Nenagh Youth Theatre runs weekly workshops in our theatre every Saturday morning, 10:00am – 12:00pm (group I), 12:00pm – 14:00pm (group II). Workshops include acting, writing, comedy improv, physical theatre and lots more to accommodate the many talents and interests of the young people of Nenagh. Drama workshops are a great way for young people to feel a part of a team, its great for their self expression and confidence.
This year we are working on two short adaptations from the quill of William Shakespeare, ‘Othello and The Merchant of Venice’. The setting for both stories is Venice and the tensions are high, as the characters confront issues of racism, duplicity, lies and deceit, whilst being led through a tangle of dialogue by two strong and virtuous heroines. The contemporary staging of these two Elizabethan plays echoes the past, whilst still remaining relevant to today’s audience. Both performances mix physical theatre and powerful dialogue to bring to the stage an exciting and condensed version of these classic texts.
“Why, revenge. The villainy you teach me I will execute—and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.” -Shylock, Act III, Scene I.
