In the late nineteenth century using blatant fabrication, espionage, and the help of The Times newspaper, the grandest members of the English political elite conspired to discredit Charles Stewart Parnell. By publishing forged letters, Parnell was accused of complicity in the horrific assassination of Lord Frederick Cavendish, Ireland’s new Chief Secretary, and his colleague Thomas Burke, who were murdered as they walked unprotected in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Parnell was also linked to a plot to assassinate Queen Victoria. Join Myles Dungan as he explains how this Plot against Ireland infolded.
Myles Dungan is a broadcaster and historian. He presents The History Show on RTÉ Radio 1 and is an adjunct lecturer and Fulbright scholar in the School of History and Archives, University College, Dublin. He is the author of numerous works on Irish and American history and holds a PhD from Trinity College, Dublin.
