Artistic Director

The Artistic Director will provide imaginative leadership and strategic direction to support the continued growth and development of Nenagh Arts Centre. The role involves delivering a dynamic artistic programme while overseeing the overall management of the organisation.

Working closely with the Board, the Artistic Director will ensure the effective operation of the venue, with responsibility for artistic programming, financial performance, and organisational management.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Artistic Policy

• Develop and deliver a balanced programme of arts and entertainment that reflects artistic excellence, community engagement, and commercial viability.
• Source performances and exhibitions, negotiate contracts, and manage artist relationships.
• Maximise venue usage through effective negotiation of theatre, office, and room rental agreements.
• Build and maintain relationships with local, national, and international artists and organisations.
• Manage and produce the annual Spleodar Halloween Arts Festival, including securing funding from the Arts Council of Ireland.
• Oversee the successful operation of Nenagh Youth Theatre.

Finance and Administration

• Attend Board meetings and provide detailed reports, briefings, and financial updates to support informed decision-making
• Develop and monitor annual budgets for Board approval
• Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting
• Maximise income through ticket sales, venue hire, and other revenue streams
• Identify and secure funding through grants, sponsorship, donations, and earned income
• Manage and sustain employment schemes including:
o TÚS Scheme
o Community Employment Scheme
o Community Services Programme (administered by Pobal on behalf of the Department of Rural and Community Development)
• Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety regulations and implement effective risk management practices.

Staff Management

• Lead, manage, and support all staff members
• Foster a safe, inclusive, and productive working environment for staff and artists
• Ensure adherence to organisational policies, including Health & Safety and employment practices
Marketing, Sales, and Audience Development
• Oversee and regularly review marketing and audience development strategies.
• Work closely with the Marketing/Administrative Assistant to ensure effective promotion.
• Act as spokesperson for the organisation when required.
• Maintain strong relationships with local media.
• Monitor sales performance and implement strategies to maximise revenue.

General Responsibilities

• Responsible for the general management and operation of the venue.
• Responsible for the direction and management of all employees.
• Ensure appropriate insurance cover is maintained (including Public Liability and Employer’s Liability).
• Ensure all organisational policies (Equality, Diversity, Employment, Health & Safety, Environmental, etc.) are current and effectively implemented.
• Co-ordinate general building upgrades and maintenance/repairs.
• Carry out additional duties as required by the Board.

Person Specification

The Artistic Director will have overall responsibility for the management and operation of Nenagh Arts Centre. This role requires a strong understanding of arts practices and the needs of both artists and audiences.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• Proven experience in arts management
• Strong leadership and team management skills
• Experience in financial and administrative management
• A thorough understanding of the arts sector
• The ability to develop and deliver an innovative, sustainable artistic programme, including outreach and education initiatives

Desirable:

• Experience in arts marketing and audience development

Essential Requirements:

• Minimum of three years’ relevant experience in the arts or cultural sector at management level
• A Level 7 (or higher) qualification in an arts or cultural discipline (National Framework of Qualifications)
• Strong leadership, organisational, and communication skills
• Strong IT proficiency
• Good knowledge of national arts policy and arts practice

Terms and Conditions:

1. Three-year fixed-term contract
2. Starting Salary: €52,239 (incremental scale will apply)
3. Travel and subsistence allowances applicable
4. Evening and weekend work required
5. 39-hour working week
6. 25 days annual leave plus public holidays (or time in lieu)
7. Reporting to the Executive Sub-Committee of the Board or designated representative
