DNLF: Poetry Workshop with Geraldine Mitchell

Poetry Workshop with Geraldine Mitchell, Nenagh Tourist Office, Saturday October 11th, 10am, €30

Tickets €30 (Booking essential – only 10 places)

Wherever she is sent, foreign correspondent and veteran war reporter Lindsey Hilsum always carries a book of poetry. For her, poetry is “a vaccination against despair.” Geraldine Mitchell will lead a workshop exploring how we may find the courage to write hopefully in these dark times. Taking inspiration and imagery from close observation of the natural world, combined with some inspirational poems by poets of diverse cultural backgrounds, she will encourage participants to find words that are both powerful and positive to write their own poems of hope. The workshop is open to both published and unpublished poets. The only requirement is a fascination with the mystery of language in the service of poetry.

Dublin-born poet and writer Geraldine Mitchell is no stranger to the Dromineer Nenagh Literary Festival. She lives on the Mayo coast, close to the town of Louisburgh and has five collections of poetry to her name. The most recent is Naming Love (Arlen House, 2024) from which she read at last year’s festival. Critic Ciarán O’Rourke has called Naming Love ‘a hymnal of praise-poems and sad psalms’, adding that ‘Mitchell maps the emotions most of us feel without knowing how to express.”
