Within the Ninth Hour of the Slowest Clock – An Exhibition by Maurice Quillinan, April 27th – May 18th, Free Admission

Launch: Thursday April 30th, 6pm

Within the Ninth Hour of the Slowest Clock presents a series of eight large-format oil-on-linen paintings by Limerick-based artist Maurice Quillinan.

The exhibition emerged from a two-year collaboration between Quillinan and Limerick poet Paul Sweeney, who set out to create a dialogue between poetry and painting inspired by the waterways surrounding Limerick City. The result brings together Sweeney’s poem Decastitch and Quillinan’s paintings in a shared exploration of time, memory and place.

Drawing inspiration from the ever-changing surface of water, the works reflect on the cyclical nature of human experience – the repeated dramas, encounters and quiet moments that shape our lives. Layers of paint, text and mark-making form palimpsests of anonymous lives and fleeting interactions, echoing the way memories and histories accumulate and overlap.

For Quillinan, drawing and painting are processes of understanding. Through repeated observation and mark-making, his work evolves as a meditation on landscape, time and presence, often inspired by the Shannon River and the Burren.
